Dental anxiety affects approximately 36% of Canadians, and 12% experience extreme dental fear. At iSmile Dental in Langley, BC, we understand that visiting the dentist can feel overwhelming — and we’ve built our entire practice around making your experience comfortable, calm, and fear-free.
Dental anxiety ranges from mild nervousness to severe dental phobia (odontophobia). Common triggers include fear of needles, past negative experiences, sensitivity to sounds and smells, fear of pain, and feeling out of control. Whatever your level of anxiety, our team at iSmile Dental has strategies to help you feel safe and comfortable.
We offer multiple levels of sedation to match your comfort needs:
Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation. You breathe it in through a small mask placed over your nose, and within minutes you feel relaxed and calm. The effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home. Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients with mild to moderate anxiety or those undergoing routine cleanings and fillings.
For moderate anxiety, we may prescribe an oral sedative taken before your appointment. You’ll remain awake but deeply relaxed — many patients report feeling drowsy and having little memory of the procedure. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Oral sedation is excellent for longer procedures like dental implants, crowns, or multiple fillings in one visit.
Every procedure at iSmile Dental includes topical numbing gel applied before any injection. We use the latest ultra-thin needles and slow injection techniques to minimize discomfort. Our dentists are trained in gentle injection methods that most patients say they barely feel.
Beyond sedation, our team uses several anxiety-reduction techniques: noise-cancelling headphones with your choice of music or podcast, TV screens on the ceiling so you can watch shows during treatment, frequent check-ins and a “raise your hand to pause” policy, warm blankets, and a calm, judgement-free environment. We never rush anxious patients and always explain each step before we begin.
Is sedation dentistry safe? Yes. All sedation methods used at iSmile Dental are approved by the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. Our team monitors you throughout your procedure.
How much does sedation cost in Langley? Nitrous oxide typically adds $50–$100 to your visit. Oral sedation costs vary depending on the medication prescribed. Many dental insurance plans cover sedation for qualifying procedures.
Can I be sedated for a routine cleaning? Absolutely. There is no procedure too simple for sedation if it helps you get the care you need. We’d rather see you regularly with sedation than not at all.
I haven’t been to a dentist in years because of anxiety. Will you judge me? Never. Many of our patients come to us after years away from the dentist. Our team is compassionate and focused entirely on helping you feel comfortable and getting your oral health back on track.
